Why did you choose this industry to work in?
I chose the civil/structural engineering field as I always had an interest in how buildings were made. I like seeing things from start to finish. With my family having a large builder orientated background, my interests always were in that field. That was mainly why I want to stay in that type of field.

What did you enjoy most about working in WGA?
The thing that I enjoy most about WGA would have to be the people. Sam, Josh and Andrew from the Newcastle office are fantastic not only in the way they teach but also in just their overall persona. They are really good to chat with not only about the engineering field but also just in general life.

Next best thing about it is – how good a working environment can be. I have been taught the whole way through and it has been great. Any questions I can ask freely and through examples and then get to do it on a real job as well. It’s nice. I just finished the 2nd year Uni student; it was nice to get a head start.

What’s the 3 most important things you learnt during your internship?
I would have to say for one, just how much I enjoy looking at design and structures and seeing how they interact with everything.

Two I learnt how to look at the entire picture then at the details. If the big picture fails, the small ones don’t matter.

Third is the fact that building connections can significantly help career growth.

What can you say about the expectations vs the reality of working in engineering?
Personally, I think that my expectations of the engineering aspect vs reality were quite similar which is a good thing as I always had high hopes of being an engineer.

The reality of what the undergraduate position would be like exceeded my expectations. It was great to have the lead engineers personally taking took time out of there busy schedule to help us.
It’s much more of a team effort than I would have realised before I started working. The checks and balances that goes into the work, the meticulous planning, the immense team effort that goes into the work is what the reality I experienced.
So it’s been really good.

What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?
The thing I enjoy most in my spare time is getting outside and doing sports. I’ve played cricket and soccer for approximately 15 years straight as well as loving golf and bike riding. Other than that, if it’s cold I love camping and in the warmer months I love going to the beach.

What are your hopes/dreams in terms of career achievement?
My hopes and dreams in terms of engineering career achievements would probably be saying that I was a part of something large scale that thousands of people use. For instance, being involved with stadiums was always an aspiration. So hopefully one day I can get there.
