The Project
Designed to inspire collaboration and creativity, the Carey Grammar Centre for Learning and Innovation (C4LI) Building creates a bold addition to their Kew campus and brings together humanities and science in a dynamic environment supporting modern learning.
The centre is built over four levels, with the Information and Resource Centre at its heart. Featuring a striking “book cliff” housing the school’s collection of books, the new facility provides spaces for student gatherings, group study, research, quiet reading, and individual reflection.
The upper levels house the “United Nations” and “Cabinet” rooms, while a dramatic Sky Deck cantilevering 8 metres offers panoramic views over Melbourne. The innovative design reflects Carey Grammar’s commitment to global thinking and sustainable education.
Technical Solutions
WGA provided structural and civil engineering expertise to bring this ambitious vision to life. To achieve the signature “book cliff” effect, each floor plate was cantilevered further out at successive levels. An unpropped steel composite solution was adopted, eliminating the need for multi-level propping and streamlining construction.
The 8-metre Sky Deck was made possible by two 25-metre-long, 4-metre-deep steel wall trusses, designed for transport in sections and assembled on-site. WGA worked closely with architects, services consultants, and fire engineers to optimise the structure, ensuring steel elements required no additional fire protection coatings. Civil works incorporated Green Star principles, supporting the building’s sustainability goals.
Client Focus
The iconic centre achieved a 4-star rating under the Green Building Council of Australia’s design standard, reinforcing Carey Grammar’s commitment to environmental responsibility. The result is a flexible, future-ready learning hub that will continue to inspire generations of students to come.
