The Project

The Centre for Higher Education Studies (CHES) is a $27.5 million modern, government-funded facility that supports the high achieving senior secondary school students in Victoria. The project was completed in 2022 for the Victorian School Building Authority (VSBA).

Technical Solutions

WGA provided structural and civil engineering services for the four-level centre, which included an auditorium, technology-rich learning spaces and tertiary standard science and design laboratories. The design process for the project had to consider several constraints, such as, adjacent buildings, large masonry underground drains, easements and overhead utilities surrounding this site. To address these, WGA carefully planned to arrange access for delivery, and lifting of materials and equipment.

A key design requirement of the client was for the building to exhibit a a high level of sustainable design. To accommodate this, WGA incorporated a hybrid floor structure comprising of a concrete primary element, sized for fire capacity supported on laminated timber floor joists for in-service conditions.

Client Focus

Through meticulous planning and innovative design solutions, WGA played a pivotal role in helping institutions like CHES broaden their mission. Their efforts have significantly enhanced educational access and improved outcomes for students across Victoria.
