The Project

WGA provided geotechnical, civil and structural design services for the 2nd Hockey Pitch at the State Sports Park for the Department for Infrastructure and Transport and Office for Sport and Racing, on behalf of Hockey SA. WGA was heavily involved in the decision-making process, liaising with the requirements of stakeholders during the concept and detailed design of the project, to deliver a world-class water-based hockey pitch to FIH guidelines.

Technical Solutions

The project included a player dugout, technical bench, lighting and viewing areas with an access road and pedestrian link to the existing clubrooms. WGA liaised closely with hockey pitch surfacing suppliers to provide options to Hockey SA for the current best surfaces available.

Client Outcome

This site had challenging stormwater issues with WGA having prepared the original design for the State Sports Park’s Stormwater Management Strategy. Consideration had to be given to the pitch level and impervious area allocation to meet the existing site detention limits to avoid the need for additional detention.

WGA undertook the geotechnical investigation which identified reactive clays close to the subgrade of the pitch. To ensure the longevity of the pitch surface and base structure WGA recommended removal of a portion of the highly reactive clay layers and subgrade improvements to reduce the shrink-swell movements to acceptable levels.
