 The Project

The Memorial Drive Tennis Centre redevelopment involved the removal of the roof to both existing grandstands and the design and construction of a 6000m2, 80m clear-span fabric roof over the centre court. The steel roof structure has created an all-weather tennis facility that meets international standards and has put Adelaide back on the global Drive map for the professional tennis circuit.

Technical Solutions

WGA provided geotechnical, structural and civil engineering for the newly redeveloped Memorial Drive Tennis Centre, including the new single-span woven fibreglass membrane fabric roof covering the existing stands and centre courts. We also provided heavy lift demolition engineering to remove the existing roof structures in preparation for the new roof. The roof needed to be removed in a single, dual-crane lift so that the stands below could be retained.

Client Focus

Located within the historic and beautiful Adelaide Oval precinct, the design was heavily driven by aesthetics – the form of the exposed roof structure being equally important as its function. To meet this and other project parameters, which included a column-free space, an economical solution, a compressed design and construction programme, and a restricted site that included construction over ‘live’ offices, structural steel was the only material that could have been successfully used. The steel-trussed solution adopted allowed all design and construction constraints to be met, enabling the project to be delivered on time and budget and, just as importantly, created a statement piece of architecture that exceeded the client’s expectations.
