Understanding the risk of mooring line failure is crucial for industries such as maritime transportation, offshore oil and gas, and marine renewable energy. Predicting the magnitude and location of devastating force of mooring line snapback is critical to assessing and mitigating risk.
Technical Solution
WGA, in collaboration with our clients, developed a more accurate analytical approach to predicting snapback paths for input into risk assessments. WGA’s industry leading modellers simulated the breakage in an accurate fluid flow software for several wharf configurations. This prediction was modelled in a 3D model to enable easy communication of risk to the client. The process was streamlined and automated using a data led approach.

The successful completion of the mooring line snapback prediction for Parker Point Jetty required close collaboration between WGA’s maritime engineering, data analytics, and drafting teams.This was a unique and pioneering approach, pushing the boundaries of industry practices, with an outcome that will become the new industry standard.
