The 2017 Adelaide Festival of Arts saw the installation of a floating bar on the Torrens Lake hosting performances and events throughout the month-long festival. The Palais, with an open-air mezzanine bar, was designed to replicate the 1920s floating ballroom which was once a permanent feature of Adelaide’s nightlife.

WGA provided structural, civil and maritime engineering services for this popular multipurpose venue with a capacity for 800 people. The structure consisted of 14 individual pontoons linked together with steel pins. All connections were to be made while on the water and therefore required very precise tolerances. A trial fit of the structure was undertaken before the individual pontoons were craned into the river.

The structure was moored to a frame supported by driven steel piles.
