South Australia’s reservoirs play a critical role in sustaining a healthy water supply for homes and businesses, collectively holding up to 200GL of water—just shy of metropolitan Adelaide’s annual water needs. Ensuring their environmental sustainability and biodiversity is essential to maintaining this lifeline.
Technical Solutions
WGA provided a suite of specialist environmental services including waterway remediation and rehabilitation to provide community and environmental benefits, mitigating erosion and sediment from entering the reservoirs and managing risks to source water quality. Tackling projects across the Western Mount Lofty Ranges, our team undertook a series of environmental sustainability, biodiversity and water sensitive urban design works at several of SA Water’s drinking water reservoirs. These projects also aimed to improve the community recreation accessibility for several kayak launch sites.
A strong emphasis was placed on using Water Sensitive Urban Design techniques—an approach that mimics the natural water cycle to benefit biodiversity—within the public recreation sites at the reservoirs, to improve stormwater runoff management to best practice standards and address water quality risks. This included at:
- Kayak launch sites
- Car parks
- Access points
Client Focus
Collaborating closely with SA Water’s environmental team, we provided a practical approach to deliver the best outcomes within budget. The teams worked to integrate greening, biodiversity, habitat and ecosystem services into the waterway and carpark upgrade projects, with WGA undertaking onsite construction supervision and technical support to ensure completion at each site in accordance with the design documentation.
By delivering practical, cost-efficient solutions, WGA together with SA Water ensured the reservoirs remain safe, clean and sustainable for years to come.
