The $17.2 million South Eastern Freeway Managed Motorway Measures Project was jointly funded by the Australian and South Australian governments and supported approximately 35 full-time equivalent jobs over the life of the project.

With the project now complete, it’s a great time to reflect on the #TechnicalExcellence of our Traffic and Transport team. Working with DIT, BMD and SAGE Automation, our traffic and transport team have improved travel efficiency and safety for the 54,000 daily vehicles on Adelaide’s South Eastern Freeway with the use of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS).

ITS combines sensors and information processors to monitor, measure and respond to real-time traffic conditions. Applying this technology to the South Eastern Freeway – Managed Motorway Measures Project has allowed DIT’s Traffic Management Centre to manage traffic congestion, adjust speed limits to suit current driving conditions such as weather and accidents, and control lanes across the freeway. This state-of-the-art heavy vehicle monitoring system has made a significant reduction to the likelihood of fatal accidents at the bottom of the notorious freeway.

As well as the implementation of ITS, the traffic and transport side of this project involved converting an existing emergency lane into a third full-time travel lane between Crafers and Stirling, LED lighting, shoulder construction, modifications to existing ramps, improved drainage, and new safety barriers.

The site had many challenges with the freeway being a key traffic route for motorists heading city bound from Mount Barker. This resulted in the freeway remaining fully operational throughout the project lifecycle and unable to be closed at any time. The team worked around high-speed motorists and a constant flow of freeway traffic.

Due to our large in-house service offering, our technical experts were also able to fulfil all traffic, drainage, structural, lighting requirements of this project from our Adelaide office. Our structural engineers worked with our geotechnical team to develop an innovative integrated crash barrier and gantry footing replacing an existing gantry whilst providing a safer solution for both motorists and maintenance personnel. WGA worked collaboratively with BMD and DIT to provide an optimal pavement construction methodology during the challenging Crafers winter.

Not only is this project improving safety on one of the key freight routes across Australia, but it was delivered on budget and on time during the 2020 lockdown.

Well done to all involved in this award-winning project, a truly inspiring result under challenging circumstances.
