The Project
Replacement of a heavily worn 30m ³ gypsum and salt export feed hopper along with the severely corroded surrounding building. WGA completed a preliminary design, developing a material handling solution and new structure to allow a compressed installation timeframe. After presentation of our solution, the client engaged WGA to complete the full detailed design including development of construction sequence drawing to assist the installation contractor.
Technical Solutions
During our initial site visit we completed a 3D point cloud scan of the existing facility with our own equipment which proved invaluable as the Covid-19 pandemic prevented any further site visits and measurements. We completed a full 3D model of all structural and mechanical equipment including the existing and retained components using existing drawings and checking against the 3D point cloud scan.
Our model was used to produce all engineering drawings along with a set of construction sequence isometric views and hopper lifting plan which was provided to the contractor to assist in their quoting and methodology development.
Client Focus
The feed hopper is a critical piece of equipment in export shipping material handling path, reliability of material handling along with the actual equipment is paramount. Contracted third party availability requirements dictated a short shutdown window for the replacement. Our experience on brownfield shutdowns ensured our design was optimised for rapid installation allowing the contractor to finish at least 15% ahead of schedule whilst also completing non-shutdown critical work during the available time.
Our 3D model and point cloud scan was used exclusively through the design development phase for design review and Safety in Design session with drawings not produced until tender issue.
