Nick Deussen Associate - Senior Structural / Maritime Engineer
PER
Combining his passion for sailing and engineering, it was a natural choice for Nick to pursue a career as a Maritime Engineer. This discipline suits the practical design approach that he brings to every project, as the finished structure is so heavily influenced by its constructability. Whilst his core focus has been on maritime and coastal projects, Nick also has extensive experience in heavy lifting, temporary works and demolition engineering. He has undertaken a number of condition assessments and audits of existing infrastructure, and uses this experience to promote practical and durable detailing in his design work.
Nick has advanced skills in the use of Finite Element Analysis (FEA) for a broad range of applications, including structural design, construction sequencing and failure analysis. Having completed his studies in mechanical engineering, Nick has found that approaching structural problems from a different point of view offers a unique and complementary perspective when compared with traditional structural approaches. His depth of knowledge and expertise across these fields of engineering has allowed Nick to be able to facilitate working relationships between a variety of disciplines on a project team.
Proficient in all aspects of project delivery, Nick leads the design and construction supervision of mechanical and structural projects for WGA across Australia. Nick led the onsite engineering team for a major demolition project at BHP’s Nelson Point facility in Port Hedland, which was recognised as a project requiring more than just straightforward engineering skills by winning the industrial category of the World Demolition Awards in 2016.
Nick has presented at a number of Coast & Ports conferences, and is heavily involved in the maritime community as a current committee member for the WA branch of the Coasts, Oceans and Ports Engineering Panel (COPEP). Outside of work, he is an active competitive sailor, racing a number of classes at events around the world.
