Adelaide’s new $2.3b Royal Adelaide Hospital was officially opened on September 5th, after the engineering team led by WGA was awarded the Concrete Institute of Australia’s State Award for Excellence for the design of the flagship hospital. The award recognises excellence in concrete design, construction and materials in Australia. WGA Joint Managing Director and seismic expert Peter McBean led the structural engineering team and played a key role in designing the facility. As Adelaide is subject to the highest earthquake risk of any capital city in Australia, the building was designed to remain operational throughout and after such an event. The hospital has 275,000m2 of floor space and required over 2000 foundation piles to support the building structure and 100,000m3 of reinforced and post tensioned concrete. It is larger than Parliament House in Canberra and is the largest single Private Public Partnership (PPP) building ever delivered in Australia.
