Honouring King Island's Maritime History: Introducing the Seafarer's Memorial

Did you know that around 100 ships have wrecked on the hazardous shoals and reefs of King Island, Tasmania? While famous shipwrecks like Neva, British Admiral, and Cataraqui are well known, many smaller vessels remain largely unknown.

WGA is proud to have designed the Seafarer's Memorial in
collaboration with the King Island Lions Seafarer’s Memorial committee. Located at the Currie Harbour foreshore, this memorial commemorates the ships and lives lost in this area since the 1800s.
The permanent structure will resemble a 19th-century sailing ship that represents the trading and fishing vessels of Bass Strait. It will serve as a powerful symbol of remembrance.

At WGA, community involvement is important to us. Contributing to this meaningful project is truly humbling. Let's honour the resilience and courage of seafarers who braved these treacherous waters.
