Adventure Awaits: How secondments shape careers

#Secondments

Thinking of saying ‘yes’ to a new career challenge this year?
How about a Secondment?

Secondments are temporary exchanges (into different offices/ departments/teams) that you could undertake without changing your job title. When done correctly, the opportunity can boost your career, expand your network, and help you grow personally and professionally while bringing out your inner explorer.

Eshani Fernando, Structural Engineer

For Eshani, choosing an Engineering career was a decision made entirely out of her interest in science and numbers. After testing the waters during her university placement at WGA, she jumped in full-time to explore which engineering field truly sparked her passion. And the secondment gave her the perfect opening to find it out!

Harvey Deen, Mechanical Drafter

Coming from a family of builders, Harvey naturally gravitated towards drafting – a perfect match to meet his curiosity and eye for detail. He started his career at WGA, opening up a window to his first secondment to the Adelaide office. Hear more from Harvey of his experience where he got to work on mine site upgrades, tunnels, and conveyors, all the while allowing him to explore South Australia’s beauty.

Meeka Watson, Project Manager

Starting out as a graduate project manager in WGA’s Melbourne office, Meeka counts herself lucky to have had a great start to her project management career, working on a range of projects. But stepping into larger projects with bigger teams? That’s a whole new opportunity this secondment opened up, as it pushed her project management skills to the next level.

What made you take on this secondment?

Eshani: I was eager to expand my skillset and gain experience outside my usual team and projects. An opportunity for professional and personal growth. Working in a different sector and city seemed perfect for this. I looked forward to experiencing a new city, meeting new people, and stepping out of my comfort zone.

Harvey: I needed to learn more on the Industrial and Resources sectors, and I was looking for an opportunity to move into mechanical. The interoffice program gave me a great opening to focus on my growth.

Meeka: This secondment was a chance to dive into diverse projects and connect with new people. I wanted to push and challenge myself to grow from the experience.

What did you enjoy most about the secondment and how did it influence you?

Eshani: Exploring Perth’s stunning beaches was a highlight and working on a project that involved travel to Rottnest Island was an unforgettable experience. The breathtaking scenery provided constant inspiration and made the work even more enjoyable.

Harvey: It allowed me to expand my professional and personal networks, share knowledge, work closely with the Mechanical/Industrial team, and especially get myself well-versed in mechanical design software like Inventor and MicroStation. I was also able to explore South Australia from beautiful coastlines, wineries and breweries to hikes and swims.

Meeka: I had the opportunity to work on larger projects that presented their fair share of challenges. This experience allowed me to collaborate closely with business leaders and interact with different personalities. As a result, I improved my self-confidence, developed greater independence, and learned to adapt to change effectively. Additionally, I got to explore a new city and spend time in nature, which was incredibly refreshing.

What tips do you have for others considering secondments?

Eshani: I recommend thorough research, including learning about your destination and the projects you will be working on, planning your travel (consider holidays and long weekends!), connecting with past secondees for valuable advice. Embrace the adventure!

Harvey: It’s an awesome experience, especially if you are starting your career – you get to make friends and build your network. It’s a great way to explore somewhere you would generally not think of moving to.  If I was to apply again, I would consider New Zealand!

Meeka: Say yes! It’s an excellent opportunity to take on challenges headfirst and overcome self-doubt. You need to be open to change and things constantly moving around you. If I get another chance, I think I will pick Perth.
