Skip the aisles

Traffic engineers shine when they get to create safe and easy to navigate spaces. Their work shapes the way communities experience our cities, from transport systems to car parks and shopping spaces.

In a bid to improve consumer shopping experience, WGA engineers across Australia worked together with Woolworths to enhance their Direct to boot (DTB) service. With the rise of online shopping, features like DTB allow customers to shop online and have groceries delivered directly to their vehicle at the store site. It’s a convenience that provides a faster shopping experience for those short of time.

Delivering a smooth and efficient customer experience for services like Direct to Boot requires smart planning and safe, well-managed site access. That’s where we come in. We specialise in on-site safety auditing, identifying risks in traffic flow and pedestrian access, and working closely with our clients to enhance protection for all users. With so many moving parts, it’s critical to get the details right.” says Eric Kydd, Principal Traffic Engineer who spearheads the WGA operations for Woolworths.

No fuss grocery runs

Our team powered through 220 assessments to enhance the DTB experience in Woolworths stores nationwide. Here’s how they made a difference:

Safety of pedestrians and Woolworths team: Dedicated shared zones, bollards and crossings help to safely separate pedestrians from vehicles. This keeps team members away from high-risk zones like access ways.

Recommending traffic calming features: Control measures like speed humps, zebra and raised crossings are installed to slow vehicles down near the DTB bays.

Assessing risks and reviewing traffic flow and car park layouts: A great design layout can minimise conflict points (places where pedestrians and vehicles cross paths) and improve traffic flow for pedestrians and vehicles alike.

“Through smart planning and a strong focus on safety, our Australia-wide traffic team completed 220 inspections in just seven weeks. Each region banded together to tackle this mammoth task, demonstrating outstanding teamwork and a shared commitment to safety on-site. It was a pleasure to work alongside Woolworths – a like-minded partner equally passionate about delivering better, safer outcomes together” adds Eric.

Enhance safety and visibility features like lighting and video surveillance: Installing clear signs and road markings can alert drivers to pedestrian activity and help guide everyone safely through shared spaces. Adequate lighting is crucial, especially during early mornings and evenings, as it allows both drivers and pedestrians to see each other clearly, thereby reducing the likelihood of accidents.
