The Project
The Rosebery Schools project was one of the biggest single-school projects undertaken in the Northern Territory at the time and was designed to accommodate the fast-paced growth of Palmerston, a satellite town 30km south of Darwin.
Delivered as a design-and-construct project with Halikos Group (now DCOH) as the contractor, WGA led the structural engineering for this project.
Technical Solutions
The project included the construction of a pre-school, primary school, middle school, and associated works. The co-location of the primary and middle schools enabled shared sports and performing arts facilities, including an oval and a gymnasium that also acted as a community cyclone shelter.
A key design challenge was the gymnasium, which measured 35m by 21m on plan and was 11m high, with no internal or wall-mounted columns. The design was further complicated by a long wall sloping outward at a 5° angle, and the building’s need to serve as a cyclone shelter. To address this risk, WGA’s design solution included using precast concrete walls and a fully braced roof structure.
Client Focus
With over 20 buildings and associated works under construction, the team demonstrated a high degree of communication and organisational skills. This was essential to meet the project deadline and allow students to start the 2011 school year in the new Rosebery Schools.
