Adelaide Comets Football Club Lighting Upgrade

WGA AU | Wallbridge Gilbert Aztec - Adelaide Comets Football Club

The Project

The Adelaide Comets Football Club were undertaking an upgrade at their home club at Ellis Park in South Australia. Our team was engaged to provide civil and geotechnical services to resolve long‑standing drainage issues surrounding the pitch and clubrooms and support the club’s goal of enhancing training and match‑day visibility through a major sports lighting upgrade.

Technical Solutions

The club identified persistent water pooling and boggy ground impacting player safety and spectator access. WGA delivered a civil design solution to reshape levels, improve stormwater performance and create more usable viewing areas. This work included drainage remediation around the northeast and southeast corners of the clubrooms which tied into the newly proposed pitch subsurface drainage works. In addition, surface upgrades along the southern edge, and a regraded practice area draining to the existing swale.

WGA also assessed electrical capacity, completed a new lighting layout, and designed reticulation, controls and future‑proofed conduits. The lighting upgrade was informed by geotechnical investigations confirming that the four 22 m and five 25 m towers require 4–5 m deep bored pile footings founded in very stiff Keswick Clay.

Client Focus

Through close collaboration with Adelaide Comets Football Club and the City of Adelaide, WGA’s multidisciplinary approach has supported the delivery of safer, more resilient, and more enjoyable football facilities at Ellis Park. The combined civil and lighting upgrades enhance the club’s ability to train, compete, and grow — strengthening community connection and enriching the sporting experience.
