THE PROJECT
Located near Gladstone, Queensland, this project aims to create a hydrogen supply chain for the domestic market. The facility is earmarked to produce approximately 4 tonnes of hydrogen per day using electrolysis technology.
TECHNICAL SOLUTIONS
A leading renewable energy company in the Asia-Pacific engaged engineering company UGL to lead the engineering program of works. UGL then brought in WGA to conduct an engineering investigation divided into two phases: a preliminary front-end engineering design (FEED) followed by a more detailed early contractor involvement phase.
The scope of works included conceptual process flow design, covering accumulators, compressors, storage, dispensing, and other related systems. It also involved a preliminary mass and energy balance assessment, optimisation of cooling and system safeguard requirements for various compressor configurations, pressures, and logistics considerations, as well as the development of a control philosophy around compressor and storage cycling.
Additional works included the creation of piping and instrumentation diagrams, including control loops and valves, preliminary equipment lists, and basic datasheets for vendor equipment pricing. Main pipe sizing and materials of construction specifications were also addressed.
CLIENT FOCUS
The design process and successful completion of the project were facilitated by collaboration among various parties throughout the project lifecycle. With an emphasis on safety in design, a hazard identification study (HAZID) was carried out to systematically identify and evaluate all potential hazards. Significantly, the designs met Importance Level 4 standards.
Working closely with the client, WGA was able to propose innovative solutions to ensure the design and the overall project provide future proof concepts by considering:
- Extended equipment lifecycle
- Efficient energy utilisation
- Process safety
- Reduced environmental impact in terms of the use of alternative chemicals
- Optimised product loadout and dispatch
