The Project

Handling exports worth $6.2 billion annually and processing 430,000 twenty-foot equivalent units each year, the Lyttelton Port Company is the biggest port on New Zealand’s South Island.

Faced with the need to prematurely decommission one of their container cranes, the Lyttelton Port Company enlisted WGA to conduct a comprehensive structural, mechanical and electrical inspection of three of their existing Liebherr container cranes. The objective was to assess the current condition of the cranes and establish a baseline for future maintenance.

Technical Solutions

By employing drone technology, a method previously utilised by WGA in Australia, our team of mechanical, maritime, and structural engineers were able to inspect the cranes without requiring lengthy shutdowns.

Upon completing the inspections, our engineers processed the footage using 3D imaging software, enabling them to assess the condition of the cranes and develop an ongoing asset inspection regime.

Client Focus

This digital methodology allows our team to complete the asset capture in a single day, as opposed to the traditional manual inspection which would require taking the cranes offline for three days. This approach also mitigates the risks associated with working at heights.

With digital captures in hand, the client can now compare footage from previous inspections to identify any new corrosion or defects that may have emerged, and scope up repairs as required.
