Project Overview
The client’s rail network transports grain from receival sites across Western Australia’s wheatbelt region to port facilities in Albany, Esperance, Geraldton and Kwinana. In 2023, the operator identified economic advantages in expanding the rail out-loading infrastructure at its Mingenew receival site. This led to WGA being engaged to integrate two additional 700-tonne over-rail bins in addition to the four existing 500-tonne bins.
Technical Solutions
WGA was tasked with addressing several operational challenges to increase the capacity and throughput of the Mingenew out-loading facility, which services grain trains of various types. Key issues included:
- Inadequate siding length, causing excessive train-splitting and shunting
- Limited out-loading performance and constrained throughput
- Insufficient storage to accommodate a full train load of grain
- Safety risks due to trains blocking internal roads, external access and the mainline
WGA’s design solution included the extension and modification of the existing over-silo infeed conveyor system, to enable grain to be delivered to each of the six bins at a rate of 1,000 tonnes per hour. The scope of work also involved the installation of maintenance platforms, access stairs and ladders, along with a comprehensive fall protection system. Structural elements were carefully designed to ensure adequate rail clearance. In addition, a commercial mobile auger was provided, featuring a discharge sock compatible with the loading spout to facilitate the emptying of silos. The design also incorporated pneumatically controlled valves, including slide gates and diverters, to support efficient and flexible grain handling operations.
Client Focus
WGA’s design successfully met the project requirements for upgrading the rail out-loading facility, increasing bin capacity and improving conveyor system performance. The project was delivered with minimal operational disruption and included integrated safety systems to support construction activities. The upgraded Mingenew facility is now positioned to deliver long-term operational efficiencies for the client.
