The Project
Peabody’s Metropolitan Mine in NSW produces high-quality steelmaking coal and was undertaking a major upgrade to their powered winding system, known as a Koepe Winder. The winder is a type of hoist used to lift and lower a conveyance/cage that transports personnel 270m underground. In order to legally operate, the NSW Government Resources Regulator requires all new mine winders be design registered, along with any design modifications to existing systems.
Technical Solutions
WGA was subcontracted by Siemag Tecberg Australia to act as the principal verifier of the design upgrades, performing and signing off on independent third-party mechanical, electrical, structural, and functional safety verifications.
This included detailed engineering reviews and verification of a completely new winding engine with new hydraulics, a reassessment of the capacity of the ageing headframe, new shaft steelwork and a new bottom shaft arresting system. WGA also signed off on the commissioning plan and the HRA (High Risk Activity) application to the Regulator.
Client Focus
With an extremely tight schedule for the entire replacement, WGA worked closely with multiple teams to ensure the verification process ran smoothly and was completed on time. For Peabody, maintaining strict safety standards and minimising downtime were critical factors, as without an operating mine winder the impact to their operations would have been significant.
