Toorak College Community and Arts Precinct

WGA AU | Wallbridge Gilbert Aztec - Toorak College Community and Arts Precinct

The Project

Set on the grounds of 19th century-built historic Toorak College in Mount Eliza, Victoria, this theatre facility has some stellar features. As one of the largest available performance facilities in the Mornington Peninsula, the project is designed to awe and uplift the students’ creative spirits while also serving as a conference and event space for the local community, whether it’s training, education, or arts.

Technical Solutions

WGA was engaged as the project’s Structural and Civil consultant, working alongside LBA Construction, Gallagher Jeffs, Cox, and Stantec. A special focus was placed on the design and installation of the precast seating panels, which were installed on precambered steel stringers. This involved ensuring the structural integrity and stability of the seating panels, as well as coordinating with other elements of the project, such as the steel roof trusses and the precast perimeter walls.

Key features of the project include:

  • Hanging Ceiling Rods and Façade Screen: unique ceiling design of suspended aluminium rods and a façade screen
  • Retractable and Fixed Seating: Inside the auditorium features 384 retractable seats (telescopic platform), 229 fixed seats, and 145 loose seats, totalling 758 seats.
  • Precast Perimeter Walls: These walls stand 12 meters high on three auditorium sides, delivering sound insulation, acoustic control, fire resistance, and structural strength.
  • Steel Roof Trusses: The auditorium roof holds a 6.5-meter cantilever beam with 1-meter outriggers supporting façade elements and ceiling rods.
  • Loading Dock and Precast Yard Inspection
