The Project
Pedare Christian College is a coeducational Anglican and Uniting Church school comprising junior, middle, and senior schools, located in Golden Grove, South Australia.
In 2023, the college embarked on the expansion of its senior school with a new two-storey facility, designed to serve as a dedicated home base for up to 275 Year 11 and 12 students.
The new building is positioned south of the existing administration building, replacing the former car park, which is relocated further south to support the facility.
Technical Solutions
Engaged by Swanbury Penglase Architects, WGA provided civil, structural, geotechnical, and traffic engineering services for the new senior school building.
Our technical solutions included a two-storey reinforced concrete frame constructed on a steeply sloping site. Due to the column free large spans required at ground floor level, a post-tensioned reinforced band beam and one-way slab solution was adopted for the first floor. The first-floor architectural layout includes a large column free lecture theatre, which was achieved using long span structural steel framing. A main feature of the new building is the cantilever central lantern area with a long span feature stair which was achieved using structural steel framing and careful detailing.
Due to the steeply sloping site an elevated walkway was required to connect the senior school to the rest of the campus. This was achieved in an elegant solution through the inclusion of a reinforced concrete cantilever column and walkway solution.
Stormwater management solution included the use of a stormwater detention approach. Careful traffic planning and civil design was required to connect the new carpark to the existing whilst allowing for emergency services vehicles to use the area with due consideration for the steep site topography.
The new facility features modern classrooms, a lecture theatre, flexible breakout and independent study areas, staff offices, a student services reception, storage facilities, and upgraded vehicle access and parking.
