Project Overview

The Limestone Coast Hydrogen Hub by entX, is set to transform South Australia’s industrial landscape. The unique Green Hydrogen Hub is co-located on the site of the largest natural gas user in the South-East, the Millicent Mill operated by Kimberly-Clark Australia.

With a direct industrial decarbonisation offtake, this groundbreaking project is a first-of-type in Australia and will enable Kimberly-Clark’s transition to clean fuel and renewable energy. The project will be executed in two stages, with the complete clean energy transition achieved in Stage 2.

Currently the Millicent Mill’s energy demand is primarily met by natural gas, which fuels an on-site co-generation turbine, generating electricity, steam, and hot exhaust gases for process use, supplemented by electricity purchased from the East Coast electricity grid. To meet the Millicent Mill’s emission reduction targets, entX working in conjunction with KCA as the off-take customer, propose a staged approach to reduce operational carbon emissions: Stage 1 will involve blending 20% v/v green hydrogen into the natural gas supply to the Mill; Stage 2 will involve the Millicent Mill transitioning to combustion of 100% green hydrogen for all process heat requirements.

This project will secure the future of the Limestone Coast region by ensuring a sustainable pathway for local manufacturing and region’s largest employer.

Technical Solutions

In collaboration with BOC South Pacific, WGA was engaged by entX to complete the Feasibility Study on the LCH2 itself, and the integration of hydrogen in the Millicent Mill’s operations. Through the development of a techno-economic model, the team were able to trade-off capital against operating expenditure to optimise the generation capacity, utilisation and storage capacity and plant configuration.

The development of the feasibility level design allowed refinement of the economic model to support an Initial Investment Decision on progressing to Front-End Engineering Design.

WGA was able to leverage our expertise in hydrogen with an established pedigree in complex, brown-fields, industrial integration to deliver a comprehensive approach to the balance of plant and Mill augmentation designs. As the lead consultant WGA coordinated and consolidated contributions from the off-taker, technology partners, multiple consultants and utility providers.

Client Focus

WGA is committed to designing better environments for future generations and continuously evolving to find the right solutions for our clients. By working collaboratively with entX and their partners, we advance towards entX’s vision of a brighter, more resilient future.
