The Project
After the Barossa Valley missed out on hosting in the first two years of the AFL Gather Round, Premier Peter Malinauskas was determined to find a site that would best promote the tourist region and South Australia to the rest of the nation. The Lyndoch Recreation Park became the ideal space to create two AFL-sized ovals as well as a multi-sport hub. The State Government and the Barossa Council dedicated $45.7 million towards a complete upgrade of the facilities, to ensure it met Australian League Football standards for this major event.
In collaboration with iEDM, Built, DASH Architects, Lucid Consulting Australia, and Landskap in 2024, The Barossa Council engaged WGA as civil, geotechnical, structural, and traffic engineers for a full-scale redevelopment with a 11-month timeframe to be ready for April 2025.
Technical Solutions
As of February 2024, WGA and contractors ensured work packages were issued progressively so construction could commence while design was being developed.
The scope of the works included:
- New clubrooms, viewing pavilion, and acrylic netball and tennis courts
- Upgrade of the existing oval levels and footprint to AFL standard.
- A second oval – can operate as an athletics field
- Cricket facilities including turf and synthetic wicket
- Storm water infrastructure, new carparks and formalised roadway entry
- Traffic impact assessment, pedestrian links, exercise equipment areas, shelter, playground, and landscaping
