The Project
Maryborough District Health Service is a healthcare provider located in Victoria. The hospital, operational since 1857, aimed to modernise its facilities and improve outcomes for patients, staff, and the community. In May 2021, the Victorian Health Building Authority announced the $115 million expansion of the Hospital to support the region’s growing healthcare needs.
Partnering with architects Studio STH, WGA delivered civil, geotechnical, and structural engineering services to support the hospital’s expansion.
Technical Solutions
The scope of works included developing a new three-storey facility to the south of the existing hospital, refurbishing the original 150-year-old building, and designing a new car park at the Maryborough District Health Service site. Our civil design scope included stormwater management systems, pavement design, site levels, and site drainage to ensure long-term functionality, resilience, and safety across the health service precinct. Key Highlights included:
- Heritage Building Refurbishment: WGA undertook the structural refurbishment and reinstatement of the original heritage building, ensuring its integrity while preserving the character of the historic bluestone façade.
- New Hospital Building Design:
- The new hospital facility was designed to accommodate a range of critical health services, including an urgent care centre, birthing suites, operating theatres, and a medical centre.
- To meet strict comfort and operational standards, floor vibration performance was a key design consideration, particularly in sensitive zones such as operating theatres and patient rooms.
- The structural design adopted post-tensioning techniques to reduce concrete and reinforcement usage, contributing to a smaller environmental footprint.
