Project Overview
BHP has advanced operations at one of the world’s largest deposits of copper, gold and uranium, location in South Australia. As mining operations transition into the Southern Mining Area, the levels of bismuth (Bi) and antimony (Sb) in the ore have increased. To protect the premium copper quality Olympic Dam currently produces, BHP has completed a program to install a new bismuth and antimony removal system.
Technical Solutions
WGA’s innovative solution features ion exchange technology designed to efficiently remove over these elements while leaving copper untouched, recovering up to 80% of the reagents used in the removal. This will help mitigate scaling issues, reduce maintenance downtime, and maintain the extra high quality of the copper cathode.
WGA provided comprehensive engineering services and guided the integration of Fenix Hydromet’s specialised design into the overall plant operations. Our collaboration spanned the entire project lifecycle—from concept and front-end engineering to detailed design, commissioning and ongoing operational expert input.
Client Focus
WGA’s tailored solutions and collaboration with BHP ensured a seamless transition into the Southern Mining Area operations, while continuing to maintain the high standards of Olympic Dam’s copper output.
