Spirit of Tasmania Geelong Terminal

WGA AU | Wallbridge Gilbert Aztec - Spirit of Tasmania

The Project

The relocation of the Spirit of Tasmania’s Victorian terminal from Port Melbourne to Geelong Port in 2022 led to a major infrastructure upgrade at Geelong’s Corio Bay. The new 12-hectare site transformation included:

  • A purpose-built terminal building
  • Upgraded docking infrastructure
  • New staff quarters
  • Passenger loading and check-in facilities

Geelong Ports initially engaged WGA to deliver schematic design for civil, geotechnical and structural elements for the terminal building. Later, Kane Constructions novated WGA to complete full documentation and contract administration.

Technical Solutions

The engineering design specifically aimed to repurpose an existing structure instead of demolishing it and constructing a new one.

Key contributions of Adaptive Reuse included:

  • A design that reformed an existing portal frame shed that sat over a wharf constructed in 1965.
  • The design enhanced the earthquake load capacity of the structure, and a performance solution was developed to ensure the wharf met National Construction Code and earthquake compliance standards.
  • WGA conducted detailed site investigations to assess and identify the areas needing further upgrades.

As a result of the engineering solutions, the sustainable conversion of the structure led to:

  • House the terminal and staff quarters.
  • Install plant platforms on the shed roof.
  • Add a suspended concrete mezzanine level for office and staff space.

Client Focus

The project highlights WGA’s expertise in the adaptive reuse of maritime infrastructure through cross-disciplinary collaboration. The delivery emphasises sustainable solutions for underused spaces, supporting sustainable infrastructure development.
