Stephenson Avenue Extension Independent Design Verification

WGA AU | Wallbridge Gilbert Aztec - Stephenson Avenue Extension Independent Design Verification

The Project

The Stephenson Avenue Extension project forms part of the City of Stirling’s larger plan to revitalise Stirling City Centre. The project kicks off the first stage of their urban regeneration plan, which will bring in a mix of retail, office, residential, community and entertainment activities to Stirling’s City Centre, centring around Stirling Station.

Transforming Perth’s north-west connectivity, Stephenson Avenue stretches from Scarborough Beach Road to Cedric Street. This major upgrade includes a brand-new Mitchell Freeway interchange, replacing the existing Cedric Street Interchange, a new Smart Freeway southbound on-ramp with coordinated signals, and new essential local road links seamlessly connecting activity hubs, including Westfield Innaloo and the broader Stirling City Centre. The project also boasts an essential upgrade to the Stirling Bus Interchange from an 18-Stand to a 30-Stand bus interchange facility, with a new pedestrian concourse linking to the southern carpark.

Technical Solutions

WGA was contracted to provide expert independent design verification services for the detailed design of two multi-span bridges intended to be launched over the existing Mitchel Freeway in Western Australia. One bridge formed the extension of Stephenson Avenue, and the second for the new bus interchange at Stirling Station. This required rigorous assessment and validation of the bridge design to ensure compliance with all relevant engineering standards and project specifications.

In addition to the two bridges, WGA were also responsible for verification of road geometry, safety barriers, drainage, geotechnical, electrical, lighting and Intelligent Transport Systems.

Client Focus

Our meticulous verification process aimed to identify any potential flaws or inconsistencies early, allowing for prompt resolution and optimisation of the design. The extension will significantly improve safety and reduce congestion, paving the way to 55 hectares of opportunity to create a vibrant, safer, and community-focused Stirling City Centre.
