Vanuatu Post-Earthquake Recovery and Support

WGA AU | Wallbridge Gilbert Aztec - WGA's Peter Larratt and Shayne Burns support earthquake recovery efforts in Vanuatu

The Project

On 17 December 2024, a Mw 7.3 earthquake struck near Port Vila, Vanuatu, followed by a low-amplitude tsunami, causing widespread damage to the infrastructure. WGA, in partnership with the Vanuatu Australia Infrastructure for Development Program, was already actively engaged in local infrastructure projects. This presence allowed us to mobilise our teams immediately to the affected locations. Following the earthquake, WGA was engaged to deliver Geotechnical, Structural, and Civil engineering services to support emergency assessments and restoration efforts.

Technical Solutions

WGA’s role in the recovery involved rapid assessments of critical infrastructure and the development of both short-term and long-term engineering solutions. Our key focus areas were:

  • Wharf Road Landslide Investigations: WGA conducted a landslide risk assessment at this vital access point. Our work included short-term solutions measures such as debris clearance, slope scaling, and the installation of protective barriers. We also provided recommendations for geotechnical investigations to support the design of resilient, long-term solutions.
  • Tagabe Road Bridge Assessment: Another vital and traffic-heavy transport link was evaluated for structural integrity, with recommendations for urgent repairs and future maintenance.
  • Public Building Evaluations: Structural assessments for over 40 government buildings—including the Parliament House, the Prime Minister’s Office, and the Central Market.

Client Focus

Working in a disaster-stricken area presented unique challenges. However, delivering technically sound solutions tailored to Vanuatu’s unique conditions was the key priority. Throughout the recovery process, our engineers collaborated closely with the client, partners, and local consultants, prioritising solutions that balanced urgency with sustainability. Our teams adapted to local constraints, applying first principles and practical solutions to overcome material shortages and logistical challenges. Six months on, WGA continues to support recovery efforts through ongoing site visits and infrastructure planning.
