The Project
The Witton Bluff Base Trail forms part of the state government’s vision for a 70-kilometre coastal path from North Haven to Sellicks Beach, catering for pedestrians, cyclists, and wheelchair access. Custom-made to link two of Adelaide’s prestigious beaches, this breathtaking boardwalk provides a safe and practical access from Port Noarlunga to the tip of the bluff.
Technical Solutions
WGA provided civil, electrical, geotechnical and structural engineering design throughout the concept, detailed design, and construction phases. WGA’s design utilised pultruded fibre-reinforced polymer (FRP) members in the boardwalk structure and stainless steel balustrades. A relatively new material for Australian projects, FRP has a strong resistance to weathering, degradation and aging in severe environments – perfect for those coastal breezes and salt water whilst minimising maintenance. The project also adopted the use of bored-pier foundations in an effort to minimise impact to the culturally significant rock shelves.
Client Focus
From the initial geotechnical investigations of the site and civil design for the boardwalk alignment, earth ramp structures and pavement, to the structural design of the boardwalk structures, barriers and landings – WGA’s approach to the design was symbiotic, ensuring that the structure is not only resilient and functional but also contributes positively to the surrounding environment.
