Alastair Oliver Ports & Marine Market Lead - SA
ADL
Alastair Oliver is WGA’s South Australia Ports and Marine Market Lead and a Senior Structural/Maritime Engineer with over 10 years of experience delivering maritime infrastructure projects across Australia.
Growing up with a family background in construction, his interest in structures began early. He was drawn to how structures were built and developed a passion for solving complex problems, which led him to pursue a career in structural engineering. Over time, his interest evolved into a specialised focus on maritime infrastructure, where engineering challenges are intensified by tougher aquatic work environments.
Today, his expertise in the design of wharves, jetties, and other coastal structures also extends to the assessment, maintenance, and remediation of timber jetty assets, helping clients extend asset life and maximise the performance of critical marine infrastructure.
Alastair believes that no two sites are the same in the maritime sector. Each project presents its own unique challenges, particularly within live operating ports, where engineering solutions must carefully balance technical requirements, operational constraints and stakeholder needs to achieve safe, efficient and sustainable outcomes. Some of his most memorable projects include the new Whyalla Jetty, Wallaroo Grain Terminal, and the Cape Jervis/Penneshaw ferry terminals.
As SA’s Ports and Marine Market Lead, Alastair is focused on helping clients navigate an evolving industry. He is particularly excited by the rapid advancement of technology and its potential to transform the maritime sector, creating new opportunities to improve project delivery, asset performance, and long-term outcomes for clients as well as communities.
